I chose this book because I m studying the structure of cozy mysteries and it was number one on a few weeks ago I finished it last night and now I m in the process of dissecting it to see why it reached the top shelf My biggest problem is I just don t like the protagonist Amy She is a stay at home cook who married money and now, spends her days in her lavish home making up recipes She naps and cooks Amy is melodramatic, paranoid and honestly, self involved Amy is all about Amy I actually like he [...]

My biggest problem is that I really dislike the main character Amy She s a stay at home cook who is married to an entrepreneur which of course makes her wealthy and now, spends her days making up recipes for a wide variety of competitions Amy is melodramatic, possibly delusional, self involved and sort of reminds me about that cliche about blondes being dumb The problem is, Amy comes off as a teenage girl than a grown woman Also who asks what are the four types of chocolate What other types cou [...]

It is a nice readI didn t love it or hate it This book had all the makings of a good story, unfortunately, I got bored I only finished it because, wanted to find out who was the murderer The main issue I have with the story is too much focus on baking and food not enough on the mystery If you are a foodie, especially, love to bake and like cozy mysteries, then this is for you I m not a foodie or like to cook and bake because of it, I thought it spent on too much time describing the main characte [...]

Amy was probably my least favorite heroine in many a long read, but this didn t prevent me from finishing this book It is what it set out to be a cozy mystery, with a lot of food related punning and symbolism thrown in Now that I ve discovered this is the author s first novel, I m upping the three stars well actually 3.5 to four because I think Janel Gradowski has done an admirable job and I would be happy to read from her Her writing is lively and uncomplicated, making for a light and easy rea [...]

It would have been better if Amy is single she bakes and makes recipes but has no bakeshop

I have mixed feelings on this book While I liked it overall especially the food recipes , as the books switched between Amy and Carla it made the book feel jumpy Yes they are best friends and Carla helped Amy with her thought process, but the switch just felt weird and didn t seem to flow well IMHO.I didn t care for Amy s character Must be nice to marry well and stay home and develop recipes for contests, but she fell flat as a main protagonist She seemed wishy washy, but the one thing I can say [...]

Had a few minor chuckles but mainly just a murder mystery about folks involved in baking contests in a small town You get a few loonies, I mean small town foodies have been known to go nuts in my experience, so you get a little entertainment there, and the main character trying to solve her murder before it can happen after stumbling over the body of the town enemy and receiving a death threat party much immediately afterwards She s a little nutty and enjoys baking constantly and trying to get h [...]

Eh I was annoyed by this one than I liked it The switching back and forth between the main character and her best friend was disorienting and didn t really add much to the story I didn t really like the main character at all The resolution was weak. There were also continuity errors For example, in the beginning when they go to the funeral, the main character and her husband are described as sitting next to another couple and exchanging words In the next paragraph, they re described as still loo [...]

Pies Peril did a great job of building a story and developing our characters I was even drawn in to the murder mystery Unfortunately, the discovery of the murderer was uneventful and really caused my opinion of the book to lessen. If you enjoy a good read about cooking and the development of a mystery, this book is for you If you look forward to the climax of catching the suspect, you will be disappointed More than anything else, I have learned that I want to experiment with recipes in the kitche [...]

When I saw Culinary Competitions, I was thinking it was like television competitions rather than a cook who entered various competitions like the Summer Festival or King Flour Company competitions It was a bit of an adjustment for me to make, but it did not diminish my enjoyment of the book I did find Amy s preoccupation with food and recipes a bit overdone at times and detracting from the plot There were also times that I wondered why Amy s friend Carla or the investigating officer, Bruce, did [...]

Pies and muffins and cookies, oh my Cute concept, I enjoyed this story Very light hearted and light read Amy the home baker has quite the knack for whipping up cutting edge recipes while trying to figure out who murdered her foodie contest rival, Mandy Jo.Her husband Alex, BFF Carla an ER nurse with recent botox treatment and Carla s ex flame, Sheriff Shepley gear up to protect Amy from someone that has an ax to grind with Amy.I found I was especially drawn in with the goodies that were coming o [...]

Warning Not Good for Your DietWow what a disappointment I couldn t tell if I was reading a Martha Stewart cookbook or a high school student s essay on the evils of cooking To call this a romantic suspense was criminal The suspense was what type of muffin will Amy make next The romance was Amy s unhealthy love with lattes I had the whodunit figured out the minute the character was introduced And if you ask me the crazy ones are Alex and Carla for putting up with Amy s stupidity.

So I give this book 3.5 stars I enjoyed the idea of dual perspectives, though I don t feel it was utilized for maximum potential If that makes any sense, basically I am saying there was no point to it I want to see how the next book is going to use it before, I write it off That being said, I like Amy, Carla I like but there were moments that I don t know Rubbed me the wrong way I don t know if I explained that correctly The mystery was pretty good, I figured it out the same time Amy did with th [...]

Great Cozy ReadI absolutely loved this book The characters are charming and the writing is great In some cozy mysteries, I have found myself getting bored, but not with this one The main character, Amy, is charming, if not just little bit silly, but not in an obnoxious way I also adored her sweetie of a husband, Alex and her best friend, Carla Plus, all of the yummy recipes mentioned in the book I can t wait to try some of them Overall, a great read.

Who knew how deviously competitive culinary contestants could be I never imagined the seedy underbelly of cooks would be revealed The friendship between Amy Carla is a warm contrast to the other relationships in this twisted tale of food mixed with murder I liked the way the police are portrayed the budding relationships with the main characters The ending was a nice surprise I m looking forward to the next culinary installation.

A little torn on this one sometimes it was like the author was trying too hard for example my legs feel like jelly that doesn t have enough pectin I m not sure how old the main character Amy is there was one reference that made me think she was around 30 but around here, those under thirty are not the least bit worried about culinary contests and manicured lawns but i thought the way she figured out the murdered was clever and i did like carla

    28. Lorna Collins on said:

This was a rather predictable story I figured out the murderer about 1 3 of the way through That said, the writing is witty and the characters are fun The food overshadowed the story, and I found the description of the small town a bit unbelievable How many restaurants, coffee shops, cafes, and bakeries can be supported in a small town And a cookbook store Really Nevertheless the writing made it worth reading.

I liked this one A new series about someone who is driven to create new recipes and bakes and cooks to compete in culinary contests, mainly so she has a reason to try and change recipes and make adaptations She s also decent at solving crimes, although she does seem to have a bunch of theories and it takes a while to get the right one Still, a good, lighthearted read, and a new series that I think I will enjoy.
