I enjoyed this children s book about Kathy Sullivan The story was interesting and I liked reading about Kathy s adventure heart as a child and as an adult I really appreciated the personal information about Kathy at the back of the book as well as a brief description of other women in space history What great role models they are for children. One aspect of the book that I didn t love was in the way it was told I felt that it was a little disjointed in the way that it bounced back and forth betw [...]

This was a lovely little book with some excellent images I really enjoyed it When I was younger I was lucky enough to visit Kennedy Space Center and learn about the space race and this just brought back some excellent memories a brilliant introduction to the first American to walk in space, and hopefully a book to inspire young girls that they can do it too.

The book is good for anyone interested in aviation The illustrations are very good and colorful To hear a story of someone who has a dream, follows it and gets to do exactly what they want is awesome Not only that, but to be the first woman to accomplish it is great Also to learn what you are achieving with the help of someone who knows about it and is close to you is also great.

My five year old has some excellent female role models, not to mention Doc McStuffins At this stage in her life, she is well aware that gender should not be a barrier for her doing what she wants to do with life Still, I always like to show her women who do great things without telling her that is what we are doing TO THE STARS is a wonderful book for that purpose It is also a wonderful book for any kid interested in space exploration, science, etc The book describes the life of Kathy Sullivan, [...]

To the Stars The First American Woman to Walk in SpaceCarmella Van Vleet, Kathy SullivanKathy Sullivan has always been a brave and daring soul Events in her childhood inspired her to look past the limitations that the adults in her life placed on her She loved people, and different cultures She learned to fly, and then became the first female Astronaut to walk in Space This book is inspiring and helpful for all children, and especially girls who want to change their role in the world.

All the reviews for this book were positive so I bought it, but I felt it really missed the mark Authors underestimate what children can understand and absorb and the text and pictures of this book display this sad fact The endnotes are the only thing of substance in this book.

This picture book biography of Kathy Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space, hits the right notes for encouraging girls to follow their dreams and have the careers they want to have Spreads go back and forth between Sullivan as a child talking about wanting to be an adventurer when she grew up, loving the weightless feeling of swimming, etc and Sullivan as an adult pursuing her career in the sciences and becoming an astronaut Back matter includes additional information about Kathy S [...]

This picture book biography aims to encourage girls to pursue their dreams I wasn t a fan of the back and forth style of the young astronaut and the astronaut in space I would have enjoyed the story in a linear fashion but I was inspired by the life of Kathy Sullivan I especially liked her note to readers and the authors note at the end as well as the history of all the females in space I cried early elementary for afterword story part is preschool and up.

When Kathy Sullivan was growing up in the 1950s, she wanted to be an adventurer Her friends didn t understand Adventurer wasn t a girl s job She should want to be a nurse or a teacher or, likely, a mom Fortunately, Sullivan didn t worry about what people expected. You may not recognize her name, but Dr Kathy Sullivan is an astronaut and scientist She was the first American woman to walk in space She flew three Space Shuttle missions in her fifteen years with NASA including the mission that launc [...]

Kathy Sullivan broke the mold for women and became a NASA Astronaut She was the first female to walk in space She did not like the expected job categories that women were expected to take She was an explorer and wanted to do things women weren t expected to do She always hated the question What do you want to be when you grow up , because at a young age she had not determined her destiny The watercolor illustrations done by Nicole Wong are very life like, especially the facial features and hair [...]

This picture book biography is a nice addition to any collection library, class, STEM collection, or biography Everyone knows about Sally Ride, but she was joined by fourteen other women in her space shuttle class Dr Sullivan was one and the first American woman to walk in space She was curious and loved adventure and science during a time when women were steered away from such things The picture book bounces back and forth in time lending a disjointed quality to the narrative The illustrations [...]

An uplifting book about a young girl, Kathy Sullivan, who dreamt of being an astronaut even as girls her age were expected to make a good marriage, have children and keep their feet firmly on the ground. This account takes us through the highs and lows of training and finally her triumph as she blasts her way to the stars. She has proved that if you work hard and have belief you can achieve anything.I was given a digital copy of this book by the publisher Charlesbridge via Netgalley in return for [...]

    20. Jessi on said:

Weirdly enough, despite the title, the book really doesn t tell much about Kathy s journey to becoming an astronaut or the kind of training she did There will be three or four pages about another activity, like her studying or swimming, and then a brief moment where an illustration depicts her in space with a caption along the lines of years later, Kathy studied another kind of instrument panel It s great that we learned about her life growing up, but I think that kids who are looking to read ab [...]

In a word scattered I loved learning about Kathryn Sullivan, but her story jumps around from childhood to adulthood and I had a hard time keeping track The illustrations were soft and inviting, but I found the text too lacking in detail and description The endnotes were fabulous and gave information, not only on Sullivan, but on several other female astronauts In that sense it was inspiring, but overall not as cohesive of a story as I would have liked.

    22. Hil on said:

I wanted to read this book because my daughter loves Space and I thought she would enjoy learning about a female astronaut It was a cute story about a little girl and simultaneously a woman who learns about how much she loves adventures and flying It kept her entertained the whole book If you have a budding adventurist who is interested in becoming an astronaut they will probably like this book.

E ARC from Net Galley. Some pages were missing from the galley it s an atypical 24 pages, plus in the end materials a sentence is not concluded on the next page Because of this, I am holding off judgment on the book as a whole It has a jumping around chronology which would be very confusing if in the final version but may simply be an artifact of the imperfect galley copy The subject matter is interesting, the end materials valuable, and the illustrations appealing.

    24. Jennifer on said:

I thought this picture book biography autobiography Dr Sullivan is a contributing author about the first American woman to walk in space was really excellent Told in alternating time frames between Dr Sullivan as a young girl dreaming of adventure and her as an adult preparing to lift off in the Space Shuttle, I loved this story about a strong woman

    25. pati on said:

Good concepts here, but the telling flip flops between Kathy Sullivan s girlhood and later achievements A straightforward telling might have been a better way to tell the story Regardless, the story is inspirational and encourages the reader to stick to their goals, no matter what others think.

When you think of women in space, most people know about Sally Ride and that s about it Kathy Sullivan was the first American woman to walk in space Extra information is given at the end of the book about other important women in space explorations as well.
